Rotational Movement in Freefall

While in freefall, free in space, you can rotate in just about every conceivable manner. The 2002 competition rules for the Artistic Events (Freestyle, Skysurfing and Freeflying) include terminology for describing the ways that you can rotate in freefall.

Regardless of the body/hip position and orientation you assume, you can rotate in any direction. You can be in a beautiful stag position, some body position that only a modern artist would consider or any other body position.

Rotational movement can be analyzed in reference to any of the three axes of the body, (Body Head-Tail Axis, Body Front-Back Axis, and Body Left-Right Axis) and the two axes with respect to the relative wind (Vertical Axis and Horizontal Axis). By combining each of the three body axes with each of the two axes of the relative wind, six different types of basic rotations are possible.

To explore rotations in greater depth, please select each of the options from the menu above in order and read details.

Remember, all of these rotations types apply no matter what disicpline in which you participate in freefall, whether it be style, an artistic event, relative work, or any yet to be invented discipline.
